WHY QUILTS

If you have been viewing my blog for a while you may be wondering why the switch to the traditional quilts right now. Well, the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival for one. It was very inspiring. But even before then I had decided to make a small traditional style quilt. I was in desperate need of tightening some sewing and embroidery skills. I have been using these skills in my larger scale works; the Woman series. So, long story short....its practice, although, fun practice. Probably too many comas there...Bridget if your reading this feel free to comment :)

SICK AGAIN

The work above by Giacometti is about how I feel right now. I am getting sick of bein sick! I'm having a bad year with a mold allergy that then leads of various kinds of viruses. Needless to say, it has put me back quite a bit on my work. I have still been able to make some contest deadlines but really need to get back to work and dont have the energy right now :( Anyone have any advise?

This is a photo of the new background fabric I have chosen. It is hard to tell but there is some sparkle to it.

WINTERSTALE QUILT AGAIN

The cross-stitch has now been made into the quilt sandwhich and pin basted. The batting is quite thick as I felt I needed to add it to the back and front of the cross stitch material so the grid would not show through. The backing material is going to change as soon as I make it to the quilt store! I am so new to this that I am finding my plan change often as I encounted each new step.

MY APOLOGIES

Sorry my blog posting is so slow these days. Our family is sick again. It is amazing how that slows things down! So here is proof that I can not stay on one task at a time! I got distracted by some fabric given to me by my mother and my daughters suggestion that it would make a good baby blanket.....baby doll blanket that is. I thought it was a good suggestion and a great chance for me to work on better machine sewing. I have a terrible time with tension, so that was the focus of this work. It was simple construction but I had to do about a dozen tension tests! I also had to research and practice the binding. I used the binding as an opportunity to practice my hand blind stitching to attach the binding.

This is the unbound quilt.

Detail.

FINISHED CROSS-STITCH

The cross-stitched sky is finally done. I feel like I learned quite a bit. By the end the back of the work was beginning to be smooth, almost like the front. I did take some liberties since I knew it would be embedded in the quilt in the end.

Now I have to begin the quilting part. I am a bit nervous about this as I have never made a quilt with the cross-stitch fabric in between. I am thinking of laying the whole piece in between, however, am worried about it showing through on the back. Then I thought I may cut the cross-stitch piece with just enough room to make sure it can be stitched in so it doesn't move. So, if anyone knows about this and could make suggestions they are very welcome!

PLUGGING AWAY

Well, you can see this has been a very slow process! I do have to say I have been distracted by life again but I am back at it. I am struggling over the colors...again! First I was unhappy, then satisfied, now unhappy again. I am also adding the fact that I originally liked the unevenness of the strips of colors now I am not sure. Ugh!!! I am going to pres forward and just see what happens. Wish me luck.

LINKING

I have not had the time to update you on the quilt images and I will get to that this weekend, however, I wanted to tell you about my links. I realize some people are new to the blog world and might not know how to navigate around a page. On the right hand side I have images and links posted that I myself am interested in. I do love to read and am almost always using a text of some kind as reference. I will try to keep a featured book posted. I am also adding a place when I am tracking some of my reference books. You will notice they change in style sometimes, as I am interested and find inspiration in many places. I have added links to my friends sites and to interesting blogs or web pages I have found. Also notice, I have also added a Flicker account where you can visit some of my traditional style paintings. As I have time, I will add more and will also included information about each piece. Please notice if you put the cursor over these links it will allow you to click and will send you to that sight. Please enjoy and give me feed back if you like. Have fun 'surfing' the web!
